"Can the Global South Speak? A South Asian Tryst with Translation Studies"
*Abstract:*
This study questions whether the Global South can theorize translation, an
area dominated by the Global North. This study traces translational
practices in South Asia to create a position of theorising translation from
the Global South. The intention is not to summarily dismiss/collapse the
Western paradigm of translation studies but to critically engage with the
field of translation as practiced in South Asia, especially in the
precolonial era, thereby creating a balance in the knowledge generation,
especially in the field of translation studies, because in order to counter
the hegemony of the Global North in any discipline, a researcher located in
South Asia must present an alternative discourse within that discipline.
Therefore, by defining terms in-depth like *anuvād*,* rūpāntara*,
*bhāshāntaram*, *vivartanam*, *mozhipeyarttu*, *tarjumā*, *chāyā*, *bhāngni*
etc., and positioning them into four models, namely, “translation as
interpretation,” “translation as illumination,” “translation as fission,”
and “translation as evolution,” I will demonstrate new theoretical models
from South Asia.

Dr Rindon Kundu has been working as the Assistant Professor of English at
the Faculty of Arts, Communication and Indic Studies, Sri Sri University,
Cuttack, Odisha, since December 2019. Since May 2021, he has been
functioning as the Founder Director of Sri Sri Centre for Translation and
Interpreting Studies, Sri Sri University, India. He was elected as the
Treasurer
of the Comparative Literature Association of India (CLAI) in 2019 and has
been working as an office bearer since then. He was nominated as the South
Asian Regional Director of the International Association of Eco-Translation
Research (IAETR). Recently, he has been elected as a Steering Committee
member of the Leadership Group of the International Comparative Literature
Association Translation Committee (ICLA) from 2023 to 2026. He has been
awarded several international grants including the International
Association of Translation and Intercultural Studies 2018 Hong Kong
Bursary, the British Academy Full Grant 2019 and the European Society for
Translation Studies Young Researcher Travel Grant 2019.
