Descrição

In this talk, Dr. Prithvi N. Shrestha will introduce you to an innovative assessment approach called Dynamic Assessment (DA), developed within Vygotsky-inspired sociocultural theory of learning (Vygotsky, 1978) and popularised in applied linguistics and language assessment by Lantolf & Poehner (2004).

He will begin with purposes of educational assessment and briefly review three competing assessment approaches that claim to focus on learners’ learning and development through assessment. Then, he will explain DA, its origin, DA procedures and types. The second half of the talk will be about the application of DA to his research on academic writing assessment at The Open University which combines DA with a theory of language in context widely known as Systemic Functional Linguistics (Shrestha, 2017, 2020; Shrestha & Coffin, 2012). The end of the talk will highlight implications of DA for teaching and learning and potential challenges.

With Dr Prithvi Shrestha, SFHEA, is Senior Lecturer in English Language in the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics at The Open University, UK. His research interests include academic writing assessment, language assessment (including testing), English medium education, critical theory and mobile technology-enhanced teacher development in developing countries, all informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics and/ or sociocultural theory of learning. He has published books, book chapters and peer-reviewed research articles in these areas. More about his work is here: http://www.open.ac.uk/people/pns52
