Resumo do minicurso:
In this introductory course in missionary linguistics, some representative texts written in the pre-modern period in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin (16th-19th century), will be analysed and compared. In the first place an attempt will be made to contextualize these text in the period they were written (prologues, didactics, objectives). Secondly, an impression will be given how some missionaries attempted to find creative solutions for the description of non-Western languages, while using the traditional Greco-Latin based framework. The third topic highlights the history of lexicography. The main question to be answered is how did these missionaries collect their material, how did they compile there works, and how did they solve some specific problems related to lexicography (the micro-structure of the entries and lemmatization practices). The final part will be devoted to didactical-pedagogical theories and practices. How did they teach? How did they learn? In the conclusion some comparisons will be made between works written in (1) different periods (for instance the 16th or the 18th century), or (2) describing typologically different languages, and works (3) written by members of different religious orders, and finally (4) those texts produced by authors who used a different meta-language (Spanish, Portuguese and Latin).
